With months of speculation, assumptions and rumor-mongering, the launch of the Xbox One and Playstation 4 has everyone guessing which console will come out on top.

But what if social media holds all the true answers?

That’s the premise of some algorithmic number-crunching done by social media lead identification company LeadSift. The firm tracked thousands of conversations on Twitter that were specifically about the two consoles. It kept tabs on which consoles were mentioned the most , then dove deeper into those conversations to understand which conversations included a sense of purchase intent.

It’s the first time since 2006 that Sony & Microsoft released a gaming console. In a few months, the highly anticipated Xbox One and Playstation 4 will be available for the masses to enjoy. In the gaming industry, the anticipation can be found at almost every corner of the globe as a mix of fans and haters are waving flags in support of the console they will be buying. The launch of these new consoles is being highlighted as a make or break situation for both manufacturers as a sense of console loyalty will be clearly shown through product sales.

While the actual winner of the console battle will not be revealed for quite some time, the popularity contest that is social media offers hints and insight at what might transpire. The clear indication of the accuracy around this data can be found in the demographic insights that were pulled from these conversations showing the attributes of a stereotypical gamer.

  1. Great dataset and presentation. I am curious about when this snapshot was taken as the real decision to part with cash is still in the future and there is a lot that both players can throw at the market between now and the end of the year.

There’s some more research that looks at the Xbox vs. Playstation competition more from the viewpoint of a timeline and the gamers’ customer journey along that timeline. You can find it here: http://www.sdl.com/campaign/si/cx-playbook.html#1… (full disclosure – I work for SDL, the company that did the research). I think combining the timeline with your snapshot provides a pretty cool “3-D” view of the competition between the two. It will be really interesting to see how this plays out especially as the launch dates and Black Friday sales baromteter approaches in the US.
